Industrial premises with the potential to cause emissions and discharges to air, land or water are known as ‘prescribed premises’ and trigger regulation under the Environmental Protection Act 1986 (WA) (CI) (EP Act).
The Department of Water and Environment Regulation (DWER) administers the EP Act on behalf of the Commonwealth Government. This requires that a works approval is obtained before constructing a prescribed premise on Christmas Island, and that a Licence or registration is obtained prior to any emission or discharge. The DWER regularly monitors and audits compliance with works approvals, licence conditions and regulations, taking enforcement actions as appropriate.
PRL hold Licence: L8846/2014/1 that encompasses all premises in the mining operation. The Licence specifies the requirements for monitoring, reporting and auditing of Licence conditions. The Environmental Management Plan, in conjunction with an in-depth risk management process, is used to manage and mitigate environmental risks. This is fundamental to the creation of positive environmental outcomes, continuous improvement and PRLs compliance with all Licence conditions.
